The Kokemäenjoki River

Gratis

The Kokemäenjoki River originates from Lake Liekovesi in Sastamala and meanders through the municipalities of Huittinen, Kokemäki, Harjavalta, Nakkila, and Ulvila, before reaching Pori, where it flows into the Bothnian Sea.

What makes the Kokemäenjoki truly unique are its diverse recreational opportunities and picturesque landscapes. As the river flows through Kokemäki, it may very well be at its most beautiful.

The river holds significant importance for local identity: for centuries, people have gathered along its banks to enjoy the peace and beauty of nature. The river has also served many practical purposes throughout history.

Fishing

The Kokemäenjoki is home to a rich variety of fish species. Popular catches include brown trout, rainbow trout, zander, pike, perch, and asp. Trolling is a favored fishing method. Many summer cottage residents and locals fish regularly, and in summer, anglers are a common sight on the river. The water area is part of the Kokemäenjoki–Loimijoki joint permit zone.

Canoeing and Boating

The Kokemäenjoki is a popular destination for paddling. It accommodates both short trips of a few kilometers and longer canoeing journeys spanning dozens of kilometers. In Kokemäki, several providers rent out canoes to paddlers.

Dredging of the river began as early as the 18th century, and the raised water level from hydroelectric plants has since created ideal conditions for boating and paddling. The river has no major rapids to hinder travel.
