The Seinäjoki's newest district, Piiri, is being developed in the environment rich with the history of the Törnävä Hospital area. The Törnävä district mental hospital covers about 20 hectares and includes several buildings, forested areas, and extensive garden spaces.
Book a guided walking tour for your group with a Seinäjoki guide through the historic Piiri area. During this outdoor tour, you'll hear about the area's past, from the time of the hospital's operations, as well as current plans and the district's development under the management of the family-owned company, Karhu.
The green park areas, fairy-tale forest paths, and historical environment of the Piiri district create a unique setting. The history of Piiri reflects the longstanding appreciation for well-being, culture, self-sufficiency, and community over the decades. Since the 1920s, the Piiri community has organized physical activity, wellness events, and cultural activities for patients and staff. The area has been self-sufficient, with its own bakery and garden areas, relying on the strength of its sense of community. The Piiri area radiates peace of mind, inspiration, and new energy. During the tour, you'll also see the town hall, designed by Matti Visanni, which now houses the current Steiner School.
